Applicants should possess a doctoral degree by research (Ph.D., D.Sc., Dr. P.H. or equivalent) in biostatistics, epidemiology, public health or related disciplines, with at least 5 years’ relevant work experience. They should have a strong research-related background; multiple years of experience in leading academic and project management aspects of research studies, demonstrated expertise in working with large and complex datasets; excellent written and oral communication skills; and the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Those with lower academic qualification and less experience will be considered for appointment as Assistant Research Officer.

The appointees will be primarily responsible for applied and methodological work in epidemiological and/or statistical research, and will work in a large population-based cohort with over 46,000 participants in 20,000 households. They will generate tables and figures for reports and presentations; write scientific publications, grant proposals and reports; assist in teaching; and perform general administrative, operational and other duties as assigned. The Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN COMPUTER SCIENCE OR DIGITAL HUMANITIES for a fixed-term period of 48 months, starting in January 2025 or as agreed.

This position is based at the newly founded?Multimodality Research Group?in the Department of Languages and funded by an?ERC Consolidator Grant?awarded to Professor?Tuomo Hiippala. The project develops novel methods and resources for studying multimodality, or the way humans communicate using combinations of multiple ‘modes’ of expression. These methods and resources are used to develop empirically founded theories of multimodal communication in the domain of everyday cultural artefacts. The data studied in the project includes, for example, school textbooks, user-generated explanation videos on social media, news broadcasts, instruction manuals and online newspapers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The post-doctoral researcher is responsible for developing new methods for querying the multimodal corpora developed in the project. The aim is to develop an open toolkit for supporting access to the corpora, which combine crowdsourced insights with vector representations into knowledge graphs. Initially, the appointee is also expected to contribute towards the creation of the corpora, supporting the implementation of human-in-the-loop pipelines for processing the data. In addition to conducting research, the post-doctoral researcher is expected to report the results in lead- and co-authored publications submitted to suitable venues, which will be determined collaboratively with the PI.

QUALIFICATIONS

The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in computer science, digital humanities, humanities computing, language technology or a related field, and have a keen interest in multimodality. Previous experience of working with knowledge graphs and/or information retrieval is essential. An interest in volunteer-based or commercial crowdsourcing or citizen science is considered an asset. The appointee should also have a solid command of programming languages such as Python and libraries used for manipulating and processing data. Experience in collaborative development of research software is considered an advantage. The appointee must be able to work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary research group consisting of researchers with diverse backgrounds. Strong teamwork skills and an excellent command of written and spoken English are also required.

The appointee is expected to reside in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area while employed by the University of Helsinki.

About the opportunity

The vision of the research group is to develop a broad and highly innovative program of research using state-of- the-art and internationally unique non-invasive methodologies related to heart disease such as cardiovascular MRI, CT, echocardiography, nuclear imaging, and ECG. This is done to better understand the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, improve diagnosis, test new therapies, and ultimately improve health.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the CMR Group at the University of Sydney, located at the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital, is a research-only academic position performing clinical research. The main aim of the research is to better understand the pathophysiology and improve diagnosis and treatment of heart disease using non-invasive methodologies, CMR in particular.

We are now looking for a

Doctoral Researcher in Wood Extractives Group 

Are you interested in improving the sustainability of pulp mill operations?

Buildup of the secondary-form wood extractives decreases the pulp mill’s productivity as they partly form different carry-over pitch (or scale) components at the fiberline, leading to excessive chemical consumption and even unscheduled shut down of the mill. The native-form wood extractives (prior to the fiberline) have been well researched for decades, but there is not enough scientific data to investigate the reaction mechanisms behind its secondary form (in the fiberline). In other words, chemically modified wood extractives in the fiberline (cooking and bleaching) is not widely known subject, only limited number of studies can be found. Industrial-scale separation / recovery process, however, is largely dependent on the reaction mechanisms that occur throughout the fiberline. If we want to utilize them in future biorefineries, we need to know how they react in the fiberline and where they can be recovered (in the form having their maximum commercial value) before being chemically spoiled (or reacted).

Your role and goals

The position is open in the Wood Extractives Group headed by Academy Research Fellow Dr. Jinze Dou, as a part of the CIMANET project BE-Stilbene. The doctoral researcher will also be co-supervised by Professor Tiina Nypel? at Aalto as well as professionals (experts) from the industry. The group’s research interests focus on fundamental understanding of the challenges posed by wood extractives, particularly in the areas of wood yard and fiber line of the pulp mills, including pre-treatment techniques for “pulping” of the bark, characterization and (bio)chemical control of pitch/stickies deposits, and functionalization of the extractives for added-value biochemicals. BE-Stilbene research is designed to find ways to gain essential knowledge of the reactions (such as degradation, oxidation or formation of newly secondary products) between the wood extractives and cooking (kraft and sulfite)/ bleaching chemicals (refer to chlorine dioxide (ClO2), ozone (O3) and hydrogen peroxide) through investigating how their profile be varied from the native form in raw chips (or bark), to the mimicked cooking and then the bleaching stages. The generated data will provide a fundamental understanding of the challenges posed by wood extractives for the pulp mill, which will generate knowledge on the further utilization of wood extractives as a source of biochemicals in the context of one of CIMANET’s thematic areas “Technologies for future biorefineries”. This industrially oriented doctoral project offers a possibility for pursuing highly scientific work while providing a fundamental understanding of the industrial challenges. The research will utilize multiple techniques, such as gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), as well as flash chromatography (FLASH) and other characterization techniques like single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC–XRD).

Your experience and ambitions

We are seeking a motivated candidate with a suitable master’s degree and expertise in biomass refining, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and have interest in wood chemistry in general. The candidate is expected to have good written and oral communication skills in English.
